Director Nello La Marca crafts this pensive story of love and loss of home concerning a young man named Gaetano who harbors a deep-rooted love for his barren southern Sicilian homeland despite the fact that his father dreams of escaping to Germany. His mother having died when he was just a small child, Gaetano was raised in Palma di Montechiaro by his ailing aunt. But while most folks born in Palma di Montechiaro long for the day they will leave this harsh landscape behind, Gaetano has gained a powerful affection for it over the years - at times realizing that others have it much worse due to the refugee boats that frequently wash ashore.
Upon befriending a young refugee named Ali who had been uprooted from his home and in turn lost all touch with tradition, Gaetano's allegiance to his birthplace grows stronger than ever before.
