I thought it was a pretty good movie. My friend read the books and she hated the movie but I'm going to start reading the series and see what she's so mad about. I thought it was great. It was set in a parallel universe yet it didn't seem so science fiction-y. I thought the acting was superb. Dakota Blue Richards and Nicole Kidman made this movie! The animals looked CGI but the quality wasn't horrible. I hope there's a sequel. I didn't understand what the big deal over the religion in this movie. I didn't see any references to the Church, I thought the Magisterium was like a dictatorship masquerading as a republic. I think the Church and all those religious fanatics blew it out of proportion so I'm disappointed that there might never be a sequel.

I am a really big fan of the His Dark Materials trilogy, but I think unless you've read The Northern Lights you will find it really hard to understand.(I mean Northern Lights as the golden compass is a brass alethiometer or truth reader) All of the religion jibes are seriously meant as anyone who has read The Amber Spylass will know.

I'm sorry but because I read the book first I hated this movie. They changed a lot of small things which bother me though probably not many others, and some big things like sequence of events. The thing that made me angriest was... *SPOILER IF YOUR READING* ...they didn't kill Roger. I don't even see how they could make the second and third books into movies because that's a very important part. Overall I was very dissapointed, mainly because my expectations were too high but also because the book didn't transfer to movie very well.

I didnt know this movie was based on a book at first but I just felt it. The story went a bit too fast and I had the idea they were skipping through it fast just as they did with The Davinci Code (I read that book before I saw the film). I recognised the same going on here. It all went a bit too fast for me and I didnt really got a chance to relaxed. The movie was gorgeous though, well not a good as some but you get the point. Id say Matinee

This is a good companion movie to the book, certainly it did a much better job than Eragon! I'd put this movie into a similar catagory as Dune... read the book and THEN watch the movie, a lot of it that seems pointless now makes complete sense and suddenly you have a pretty good movie on your hands. Without the book as a grounding, it's a mediocre.

The books were so muich better than the movie. I mean you can't even compare the movie to the books.

Okay movie adaption, but they cut out alot of "good" scenes from it that were in the book, including cutting it short! I want to see Roger die!

When i they said the winner for Best Achievement in Visual Effects was this film, i got really pissed. COMMON people TRANSFORMERS had kick ass effects and they lost to YOGI BEAR cousin. My God. I just wished that when the guy whent to pick up the oscar that statue transformed into a killer robot and take that sucker out on stage.

the polar bear fight was the only good thing about this movie. the rest just sucked. this was my pick for the worst movie of 2007.

WTF... They do NOT kill God. They kill an angel POSING as God. That's NOT a loophole. That's a rogue angel, acting the fool, trying to play God. It's not the same. I don't understand what the problem is w/ppl that just don't get it! I'll say this 1,000,000 times.... THEY DO NOT KILL GOD. They kill someone (an angel) TRYING to be God. It's not the same thing. I'm digressing, but why do Catholics think that their religion is above reproach? Man is imperfect, hence so is religion, inherently, since it's of man. God, on the other hand, is Perfect.

I HATE THIS MOVIE! And i'll tell you why. The biggest problem is that it doesn't end. It gives the promise of a sequel that will probably never come because the first movie is just not that good. And that bugs me. Picture Lord of the Rings but dumb, with no planning for the rest of the franchise, and you have to potentially wait two or even 3 years for the next film. That's bad planning and poor film making. When you have an epic trilogy that involves kids, GET TO WORK! Also it is anit-god, in that the third book involves them going to heaven and KILLING GOD! I don't think there's much more anti-god sentiment than that. Even if they say "oh he's not really god, it's an angel posing as god" well then that's your only loop hole, but still allows you to kill god, who they depict as frail and weak. I don't care though, i want to see a movie where a 12 year old girl, and james bond go to heaven and kill god.

OK for all you people who think that this movie and the book are anti-religion, think again. You might want to actually READ the book or SEE the movie. Christians who think this story is anti-religion are the same as good, wholesome, honest Queen-/Princess-like women who think rappers that say "ho" and "bitch" are talking about them...if you're a ho, then yes, that verse was for you, bitch. If not, then I wasn't talking to you. Bottom line. The story, in a nutshell, is about taking down a megalomaniacal church, one that thinks it's above reproach. If your Church is like this, then yes, bitch, I'm talking to you. If not (and I believe that 70% of them aren't), then keep it moving.

The first time I heard of this movie (I vagueley remember people around me liking it when i was in elementary/middle school) was on snopes, in the article that talked about the books basically being athiest propaganda and being made to combat Narnia. I mean, not that I'm that religious at all, not to sound paranoid, not to sound easily offended (Hot FUzz is my favorite movie!), and not to act like I hate movies with any kind of theme, but when it's a movie made from a book written to make sure kids never grow up to be religious and to eradicate any love for any kind of God in youth... that's a little hateful, isn't it? A little manipulative. I don't know, I just don't see myself seeing it.

Personally, this movie looked like some 'ole bullshit from the first time I saw the preview. I know it's based on a book but this looks like a half-assed LOTR. And isn't Robert DeNiro in this? What the hell was he thinking? Sorry, I don't get out to the movies as often as I used to, but there's no way I'd even watch this when it hits DirecTV.
